The Story of Five Old Bhikkhus
While residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha uttered Verses (283) and (284) of this book, with reference to five old bhikkhus.
Once, in Savatthi, there were five friends who became bhikkhus only in their old age. These five bhikkhus were in the habit of going together to their old homes for alms-food. Of the former wives of those five, one lady in particular, by the name of Madhurapacika was a good cook and she looked after them very well. Thus, the five bhikkhus went mostly to her house. But one day, Madhurapacika fell ill and died suddenly. The old bhikkhus felt their loss very deeply and together they cried praising her virtues and lamenting their loss.
The Buddha called those bhikkhus to him and said, "Bhikkhus! You all are feeling pain and sorrow because you are not free from greed, hatred, and ignorance (raga, dosa, moha), which are like a forest. Cut down this forest and you will be freed from greed, hatred and ignorance."
Then the Buddha spoke in verse as follows:

| Chặt cây không bứng gốc, rễ lại mọc thành cây, bứng gốc mới hết cây, do đó vị Tỳ-kheo chứng đắc được Niết Bàn. |
Ðốn rừng, không đốn cây Từ rừng, sinh sợ hãi. Ðốn rừng và ái dục Tỳ-kheo, hãy tịch tịnh. |
Đốn rừng nhưng chớ chặt cây, Đốn rừng tham ái với đầy sân si Chính do rừng dục vọng kia Mà bao sợ hãi dễ bề sinh ra Rừng to, rừng nhỏ quanh ta Cả hai rừng đó mau mà đốn đi, Các Tỳ Kheo hãy thoát ly Thoát rừng dục vọng muôn bề tối tăm. |
Cut down the forest (lust), but not the tree; from the forest springs fear. Having cut down the forest and the underbrush (desire), be passionless, 0 monks! |
| Nếu không đốn được cây (ái dục), nếu vẫn còn vướng bận trong lòng luyến ái thân thuộc, nếu còn tự trói mình bằng dục ý thì cũng vẫn như một con bê con suốt ngày quanh quẩn bên vú mẹ. |
Khi nào chưa cắt tiệt, Ái dục giữa gái trai Tâm ý vẫn buộc ràng Như bò con bú mẹ. |
Dây tình nam nữ, gái trai Nếu mà chưa dứt, còn hoài vương mang Thì tâm, ý vẫn buộc ràng Như bê bú mẹ luôn ham, chẳng rời. |
For so long as the underbrush of desire, even the most subtle, of a man towards a woman is not cut down, his mind is in bondage, like the sucking calf to its mother. |
