The Story of Five Hundred Bhikkhus
While residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha uttered Verses (273) to (276) of this book, with reference to five hundred bhikkhus.
Five hundred bhikkhus, after accompanying the Buddha to a village, returned to the Jetavana monastery. In the evening they talked about the trip, especially the nature of the land, whether it was level or hilly, clayey or stony, etc. The Buddha came to them in the midst of their conversation and said to them, "Bhikkhus, the path you are talking about is external to you; a bhikkhu should only be concerned with the path of the Noble Ones (ariyas) and strive to do what should be done for the attainment of the Ariya Path (Magga) that leads to the realization of the Perfect Peace (Nibbana)."
Then the Buddha spoke in verse as follows:

| Ta đã mở được con đường chánh đạo. Đó là một sự biểu hiện vĩ đại, sáng chói dị thường. Đã có cơ duyên nghe được thì phải tự mình hành trì, hành trì thì cởi bỏ được những dây ràng buộc tà quấy. |
Nếu ngươi theo đường này, Ðau khổ được đoạn tận. Ta dạy ngươi con đường, Với trí, gai chướng diệt. |
Thuận tu theo chánh đạo rồi Bao nhiêu khổ não tức thời tiêu tan, Sau khi chứng ngộ đạo vàng Biết phương cách diệt vô vàn chông gai Diệt bao chướng ngại hại người Ta nay truyền dạy các ngươi con đường. |
Walking upon this path you will make an end of suffering. Having discovered how to pull out the thorn of lust, I make known the path. |

Ngươi hãy nhiệt tình làm, Như lai chỉ thuyết dạy. Người hành trì thiền định, Thoát trói buộc ác ma. |
Các ngươi phải tự gắng công Ta là Thầy dạy chỉ đường mà thôi Con đường giác ngộ tuyệt vời, Tự ngươi thiền định theo nơi đúng đường Thoát ra khỏi lưới Ma vương. |
You yourselves must strive; the Buddhas only point the way. Those meditative ones who tread the path are released from the bonds of Mara. |
